Business Lesson on Doing Things Differently
“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” – Albert Einstein
We often come back to this quote to remind ourselves to keep challenging the way we do things, the way our industry does things, as well as the way our client’s industries do things. It is so often we see companies that are just doing things because they have always done them that way, and not because it is the best way to do it. We often find ourselves challenging the norm internally and with our clients. We strive to approach things in a unique way, not just to be different but to refine our process and make the end result the best it can be. Here are a few tips and scenarios on approaching things differently:
THE DESIGN PROCESS
Ask yourself: “Self, am I being challenged with my designs or am I referring back to what I already know, just to get it done?” It is important to challenge the way you do things, it often leads to better ideas. Otherwise we never branch out or try new things, which doesn’t lead to innovation. There are many agencies who have a formula to create decent work and just use that formula over and over again, some call this process but to us, it is being stuck in a rut. Great process is an integral part of any project, but it’s a basis. Creativity and innovation are the key. Sometimes when we are stuck on a design, we always try and think out of the box. Banging our heads against the same wall is only going to give us a concussion and there will hardly be a dent in the wall. We look for inspiration outside of our computers, we visit museums, or find an object, room or even outfit that really sets the tone for the design! Inspiration can come from ANYWHERE, you just have to look.
To do lists, sending invoices, following up on payments, keeping accounts, winning new business/new clients and creating a solid foundation are some of the things that are part of running a business. We are constantly evolving – and those businesses that do not change with the time and technology some times get left behind. We are always striving to do things in the most seamless way possible and that means bringing fresh ideas to the table and always treating your own business like a client’s business. I often find we go above and beyond for clients, their websites, content, social media and more, while we put off doing those things for our own businesses. We always try to generate new ideas and work towards making our company the best it can possibly be.
We are big on what we call DE-BRIEFING. After every client launch or even during a project – we evaluate places where we can make improvements right away. As a business it is important to re-evaluate what your goals are, what you want to achieve, the type of clients you want (it is OKAY, actually more than okay to say no to clients or client requests if need be) and make decisive steps to improve your business and your future!
